Liam Neeson to Retire From Action Movies

Liam Neeson has enjoyed a long and varied career as an actor. He made his stage debut in 1976 and then began appearing in films and television shows. His notable supporting role in John Boorman's Excalibur (1981) brought him increased attention, as did his turn in The Bounty (1984) opposite Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins.

From there, the sky was the limit. He began snaring lead roles, such as in Sam Raimi's action movie Darkman, but it was his performance as Oskar Schindler in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List that elevated him to the top ranks, earning him an Academy Award nomination. He easily moved between heavy-duty dramas like that and blockbusters such as Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and Batman Begins.

Yet it was his starring role in Taken (top) that brought him to unexpected success as a worldwide box office star. At the age of 56, he became known as an action hero and that led to a slew of roles in movies such as The A-Team, Unknown, The Grey, Non-Stop and Run All Night, as well as Taken 2 (above) and Taken 3.

But Neeson has decided to hang up his hat as an action star. In attendance at the Toronto International Film Festival, he told Sky News: "They're still throwing serious money at me to do that stuff. I'm like: 'Guy's I'm sixty-f******-five.' Audiences are eventually going to go: 'Come on.'"

Neeson was in Toronto to promote his true-life drama Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House. Meanwhile, he's already completed work on two more action thrillers: Hard Powder, a remake of the Norwegian movie In Order of Disappearance and The Commuter, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night), which revolves around a businessman caught up in a criminal conspiracy.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson also star. Watch the just-released first trailer for The Commuter below.

The Commuter will open in theaters on January 12, 2018.
