Can Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) do it again? The first official trailer for Les Miserables has arrived, teasing us with Anne Hathaway belting out one of the musical's most famous songs ("I Dreamed A Dream") as we skip through catching glimpses of all the other characters, like Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe's Inspector Javert, Amanda Seyfied's Cosette, Eddie Redmayne's Marius, Anne Hathaway's Fantine, and Samantha Barks as Eponine. Set in 19th-century France, the story follows an ex-prisoner (Jackman) and the ruthless policeman (Crowe) who hunts him for decades.
The film hits theaters on December 14th, and Oscar could come calling -- especially for Hathaway, whose roles as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and Fantine in Les Miserables will surely make her one of the most talked-about actresses of the year. Based on footage we've seen, Hooper had the actors sing the songs live on set, which definitely helps add more depth and emotion to each role, which is obvious here, at least for Hathaway. The girl looks intense.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Does this make up for the somewhat forgettable 1998 big-screen version of the musical?
