Leprosy Groups Upset Over Controversial Scene in 'The Pirates! Band of Misfits'

Jan 24, 2012

The Pirates! Band of Misfits (AKA The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists in the UK) — starring Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, and David Tennant — has upset leprosy groups. The trailer for the animated movie about a ragtag team of pirates who meet with a young Charles Darwin and help him find his way home features a scene in which the pirate captain demands gold from a "leper boat." After, a sailor's arm literally falls off his body for comedic effect. Leprosy groups feel the scene creates a larger stigma about this disease. Animation company Aardman issued a statement following the backlash:

"After reviewing the matter, we decided to change the scene out of respect and sensitivity for those who suffer from leprosy. The last thing anyone intended was to offend anyone and it is clear to us that the right way to proceed is to honor the efforts made by organizations like ILEP to educate the public about this disease."
World Leprosy Day happens on January 29, while the film doesn't release until March 30. Is the animation company doing the right thing, or is this a case of political correctness run amok? We're personally more offended by that awful movie title. Watch the scene in question below where ... Arms. Will. Fall. Off.
