Len Wiseman to Now Reboot 'The Mummy' in the Wake of 'Total Recall'

Sep 25, 2012

The undead are huge again, which is super convenient for Universal since so many of their classic monsters are primed for popularity once again, so it's perfectly understandable that Universal would want to reboot The Mummy. In 1999 the studio did it with Stephen Sommers and the result was a trilogy of family adventure movies with each entry raking in over $400 million a piece at the global box office; with numbers like that, it'd be dumb not to press the reboot button. Of course, that doesn't mean you have to do so dumbly, but enter Len Wiseman.

Wiseman's a very slick, commercial director, and his own Underworld franchise, which doesn't feature a mummy but does have two other classic Universal monsters in it, has spawned four films and over $500 million at the box office, so in theory he makes sense. But is the man responsible for the dud that is this summer's Total Recall remake really who you want rebooting anything right now? Surely there's a handful of other directors with big hits in their back catalog who would be willing to oversee what is essentially the pilot episode for a new series of Mummy movies.

This Untitled Mummy Reboot is being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who also produced the TV reboot of Hawaii Five-0, whose pilot episode was directed by Len Wiseman, so the decision here isn't entirely surprising. Plus, it appears that this time around Prometheus screenwriter John Spaihts has teamed with Kurtzman and Orci to cook up a modern-day version of the resurrected monster that has apparently "drawn a lot of inspiration from Michael Crichton’s books, and how he ground fantastical tales in modern-day science."

And as much as we love Crichton around these parts, that still doesn't instill in us a ton of anticipation. But what say you? Are we being too hard on Wiseman in this case? Do you want to see him update the classic Egyptian tale to modern times?
