Fans always complain about George Lucas introducing another Star Wars-branded whatever just so he can milk the franchise for all it's worth, and, yeah, it's hard not to agree in some cases. But one of the smartest moves they can make right now over there at LucasFilm is to launch a LEGO-branded Star Wars TV show, and here's why. Young kids these days are learning about Star Wars via the LEGO video game -- that's their entry point -- and while that, in turn, introduces them to The Clone Wars characters, the animated TV show still skews a bit too old for some kids, ages 5 and under. By introducing a LEGO TV show that's aimed at the real young ones, they successfully find a way to bring the Star Wars franchise into the lives of children as young as 2 years old. Not only is that smart marketing, but it's also fun for kids of all ages (literally) to be able to enjoy different aspects of the Star Wars universe through age-appropriate entertainment.
Sure, parents of small children may be a bit more inclined to like this idea more than the hardcore Star Wars fanboy, but the nice thing about having so many choices when it comes to your Star Wars content is that you can choose what to watch and what not to watch. While there isn't a LEGO TV show right now, Lucas and his gang certainly seem to be heading in that direction by premiering a LEGO-based special, LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace on Cartoon Network this July 22nd at 7pm. The 30-minute special will then replay several times throughout the weekend. Should it do well enough, chances are we'll see this become the next Star Wars TV show.
Here's the synopsis:
"A routine Jedi Academy field trip is turned into a rip-roaring comic adventure in LEGO Star Wars™: The Padawan Menace™. Tour guide Master Yoda leads a group of rambunctious Jedi younglings through Senate chambers when he senses a disturbance in the Force. Summoned to help save the Republic, he discovers that one of the younglings secretly boarded his ship...and has a taste for adventure! Meanwhile, C-3PO and R2-D2 are put in charge of the boisterous group and find themselves in over their heads. As the evil Sith prepare to wreak havoc, it's up to Yoda and the droids to ensure that their young charges aren't torn to bricks!"
