Jason Statham To Replace Daniel Craig in 'Layer Cake' Sequel

Jun 01, 2015

2004's Layer Cake is a smart, sexy, darkly funny story about a drug dealer whose only way out of the criminal lifestyle means pulling off two very different final assignments. Not only did it give the world a great movie, but it was also a sort of center stage introduction to star Daniel Craig and director Matthew Vaughn.

Now, over a decade later, Layer Cake is getting a sequel, only don't expect it to be directed by Vaughn or to star Daniel Craig. After talking about it for a few years, Jason Statham has confirmed he's going to star and produce Viva La Madness.

Though the main faces in front of and behind the camera are changing, there is one very important figure who isn't. JJ Connolly wrote Layer Cake based on his own book and he'll be returning to do the same with Viva La Madness. And if you don't feel like waiting a year or two to find out what happens to the unnamed gangster from Layer Cake, you can grab a copy of Connolly's sequel right now.

If you do read it, maybe you'll understand why Statham was so excited about it when talking with Digital Spy:

"He's such a talented writer... the book was incredible. I loved Layer Cake and this is [if anything] better. The chance to work with someone of that calibre, do something back home, it's the most exciting thing on my plate... We're doing it next year, and it's full steam ahead. We're putting all the finance together, and we're off and racing."
