Watch: The First Teaser Trailer for Luc Besson's 'The Lady'

Aug 24, 2011

Poster for Luc Besson's The LadyFilmmaker Luc Besson is best known for hyper-stylized action films (La Femme Nikita and Leon aka The Professional) and his sci-fi film The Fifth Element, but the director is looking to move his career in a new direction with his latest offering – the political drama The Lady.

The film, which is set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh will play Aung San Suu Kyi in the true life tale of the woman’s fight to bring democracy to Burma. Needless to say, this is as much a departure for the actress – who’s used to high-kicking bad guys in movies – as it is for the filmmaker.

Kyi became involved in the Burmese political conflict when she arrived in the country to care for her ailing mother. The Oxford student’s visit turned into a lengthy stay as she fought against the military rulers of the country and served as a politician. The film is the story of her struggle.

Besson and Yeoh might be working in a strange new world in the film, but David Thewlis is along to balance things out as Yeoh’s husband. We have no clue how The Lady will ultimately turn out, but you can get your first look at the feature thanks to this new teaser trailer from Yahoo Movies. It’s hard to even tell what the film is about from this clip, but it seems pretty obvious that this isn’t your standard Luc Besson film. The real question is, can Besson do serious political drama as well as he does highly choreographed action? I suspect we’ll know the answer to that when TIFF kicks off on September 8th
