Awards Buzz: 'La La Land' Leads the BAFTAs, While 'Hidden Figures' Is Honored with NAACP Image

Nominated for 14 Academy Awards, Damien Chazelle's musical drama La La Land continues to build buzz by conquering one awards show after another. The latest show to fall victim to its charms may come from a surprising source.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented their annual awards, known as BAFTAs, in London on Sunday. La La Land won the award as Best Film; other nominees included Arrival, I, Daniel Blake, Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight. Chazelle (director) and Emma Stone (leading actress, above) won recognition as the best in their respective categories and the film also received kudos for its cinematography and original music.

Casey Affleck received the nod as Best Leading Actor for Manchester By the Sea, while Dev Patel (Lion) and Viola Davis (Fences) won awards for their supporting performances. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was recognized for Best Production Design.

I, Daniel Blake, the sole British production nominated as best film, instead took home a prize for Outstanding British Film, besting American Honey, Denial, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Notes on Blindness and Under the Shadow. Meanwhile, the 48th NAACP Image Awards were handed out in Los Angeles this past weekend. Hidden Figures won the award for outstanding motion picture, a category that also featured Fences, The Birth of a Nation, Loving and Moonlight.

Hidden Figures

Denzel Washington (Fences) received the award for outstanding actor in a motion picture, while Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures, above) won for outstanding actress. Awards for supporting performances went to Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Viola Davis (Fences).

Moonlight took the award for outstanding independent motion picture and Barry Jenkins received the award for film directing. Ava DuVernay's 13th was recognized as outstanding documentary (film).
