Over the weekend our friends at Slashfilm hosted a pretty cool podcast marathon featuring guests like Rian Johnson, Bryan Singer, Jason Reitman, Damon Lindelof and more, all in support of FilmAid. The special podcast was promised after the site helped raise over $10,000 to help bring movies to an African refugee camp, and if you missed any of it the site has promised to release it in chunks over the next few weeks. Naturally a few pieces of news leaked out while these filmmakers were discussing former and upcoming projects with the Slashfilm crew, including this little nugget about how Jason Reitman almost reteamed with Diablo Cody on a standalone X-Men movie featuring Kitty Pryde and starring Ellen Page.
Page played the character, who discovered she was a mutant at the age of 13 with the power to "phase," meaning she could walk through walls and floors and such, in X-Men: The Last Stand, and will return for a cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past. However at some point after Juno and probably around the time they were flirting with a bunch of standalone "X-Men Origins movies," 20th Century Fox approached Reitman to direct a Kitty Pryde movie that would've been written by Cody and starring Page.
Of course it never happened, but it would've been interesting to see what something like that looked like. We're thinking it probably was an X-Men Origins movie, and maybe it was more teen centric and Juno-esque than the grittier superhero movies we're used to seeing these days. Something, we imagine, that was more like a coming-of-age movie about a teen discovering unusual powers and how that impacts her life. Who knows, it never happened. And maybe it's for the best.
What do you think?
