Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Jack Ryan: As previously rumored, and now confirmed, Keira Knightley will be playing the love interest of Chris Pine in the Jack Ryan prequel. Paramount also has a target release period in mind -- the fourth quarter of 2013 -- and hopes that the action thriller will be the first in a planned trilogy, with Kevin Costner also onboard as a mentor. Kenneth Branagh will play the villain in the first film and also direct. [Deadline]

The Hobbit: Peter Jackson shot The Hobbit movies in 48 frames per second, which is claimed to provide a revolutionary viewing experience, though it also raises the specter of increased costs for exhibitors. But those higher expenses will not be passed onto moviegoers -- at least for now. The limited release of the 48 fps edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14 will, however, still have the now-standard 3D upcharge. [Showblitz]

Martin Scorsese: The famed director is entering production on his latest film, The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but that’s evidently the last straw for production company Cecchi Gori, which claims to have been waiting more than 20 years for Scorsese to direct their project, Silence, a story about 17th century missionaries in Japan. The legal details are very involved and very complex, but they involve, potentially, millions of dollars in penalties. [The Hollywood Reporter ]

Looper Poster: Advance word on Rian Johnson’s time-traveling adventure Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, remains extremely positive, and a new poster revealed on the official site only whets our appetite further. We wish we could time travel to its official release date, September 28, so we could see it now. [Empire]
