For a few years now it's seemed like Hollywood has had a bit of a sci-fi resurgence. And we have absolutely no complaints about that. If it means we get movies like District 9, Inception and Avatar, we'll gladly put up with the few After Earth and John Carters (both of which aren't even that terrible) that come along with that. The question is, will Jupiter Ascending fall more in line with the first group or the second?
Written and directed by the Wachowski siblings, Jupiter Ascending is their first original film since The Matrix. It stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, and it looks absolutely out of this world. Of course, that's not hard considering it literally takes place out of this world as the trailer shows us that Tatum is playing an alien character who brings a human Kunis back to his home world.
Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
