Horror/Trailer: 'Juan of the Dead' Brings the Zombies, Cuban Style

Jul 12, 2011

Reportedly the first horror film ever made in Cuba, Alejandro Bruges' Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos) takes place 50 years after the Cuban Revolution (which is around 2009 if you're counting). Zombies have overrun the island, and the government is claiming that the United States sent them (because we probably did). It becomes one man's job to free the people from the flesh-munchers and take back the island.

While Juan of the Dead is clearly somewhat derivative of Shaun of the Dead (there could be worse influences) the movie's social commentary, gritty style, and unique setting appears to be doing justice to the undead tale in the new trailer. Check it out for yourself below, and let us know if you think this Cuban zombie story is a cool and violent little foray away from the genre's usual, or if it looks like the same old thing en Español
