Joss Whedon Talks S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show

Things are moving ahead with Marvel and ABC’s plans to launch a series based on S.H.I.E.L.D., and there was one new tidbit that came to light late last week: Joss Whedon will not be the showrunner on the series.

It was assumed by many that the creator would oversee the project from start to finish given his involvement with the Marvel Universe, but realistically he’s got bigger things on his plate with The Avengers sequel. Instead, the director will work as a consultant to the series and promises to drop in regularly to make sure things are moving in the right direction. This is a bit disappointing for anyone who was hoping for another Whedon series along the lines of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, but we’re sure some of that Whedon magic will still be present when the series finally debuts.

Regarding the show, Whedon tells EW, "The S.H.I.E.L.D. show kind of dropped in my lap, and I love working in TV. I get to really build a show with people I really trust and love. What we’re building is entirely autonomous from The Avengers. It’s gotta be a show that works for people who haven’t seen the Marvel movies. It will please Marvel fans, I think.” Whedon also added that he's "pretty on fire" when it comes to The Avengers sequel, perhaps alluding to the fact that he's ridiculously busy writing and planning that as we speak. [via EW]

Lost Star to Play the Joker in The Dark Knight Returns

With Mark Hamill's reign as the Joker ending, it's time for a new voice to take over the role of Batman's arch nemesis, at least when it comes to his animated outings. TV Guide tells us that Lost veteran Michael Emerson (who played Ben Linus on the show) will be providing the voice of the Joker in The Dark Knight Returns, a two-part animated film based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller.

Emerson (pictured as the Joker to the right) told the site, "He's one of those great villains that an actor like me likes to play because he has layers — he has a face for the world and a face for himself. He is, in a way, a villain who is a natural actor. All of that is delightful and confounding at the same time. It's freeing because of the largeness of it. When he laughs, there's nothing subdued about it. When he screams in rage, there's nothing controlled about it. The amp is turned to 11 at all times."

The Dark Knight Returns, which finds an aging Batman forced to come out of retirement for another adventure, arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms on September 25, with part two expected in February 2013. Check out the trailer below.
