Joss Whedon Talks New Female 'Thor,' Plus: A 'TMNT/Ghostbusters' Crossover Is Coming

Jul 15, 2014

Marvel took to the television airwaves earlier today to announce on The View that a new Thor is heading our way, and he is becoming a she. No, not like that, exactly, but beginning this October Marvel's Thor will officially be a woman and not a man, at least in the comics.

“The inscription on Thor's hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it's time to update that inscription,” Marvel editor Wil Moss said in a press release. Series writer Jason Aaron added, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

While we wait to see how they introduce a new female Thor, naturally fans are wondering whether this decision will eventually carry over into the Marvel Studios movies. After all, how long can you feature a male Thor on the big screen if all the Thor comics revolve around a female?

Avengers director Joss Whedon may already be teasing Thor's big-screen future after tweeting the following image of actress Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica

The unveling of a female Thor wasn't the only big movie-related comic news out today, as IDW Publishing has announced a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters crossover comic series, also set to hit shelves this October.

Written by Tom Waltz and Erik Burnham, a press release describes the story as such:

"Transported to a different universe by a faulty invention, the TMNT find themselves in a New York City much like their own, but with one major exception: a rampant ghost problem! If that weren’t enough, the Turtles and their reluctant new hosts, the Ghostbusters, soon find that the Turtles didn’t come alone…"

Both franchises are celebrating their 30th anniversaries this year, and though there's a new TMNT movie hitting theaters on August 8--coupled with the continuing attempt to create a third Ghostbusters movie--this is one crossover that will remain on the page due to the respective film rights being controlled by different studios.

Which big comic announcement has you the most excited?
