Josh Brolin Could Have Been Batman; Hopes Ben Affleck Haters Eat Their Words

Josh Brolin Could Have Been Batman; Hopes Ben Affleck Haters Eat Their Words

Sep 09, 2013

Right before every big movie actually casts its lead, a thing called the "short list" emerges. This handfull of names represent the last few actors (or directors) a studio is narrowing down for a film, and while they spread like wildfire on the Net, they're not always right. For example, James Wan ended up directing Fast & Furious 7, and he wasn't on the supposed short list for that one. In the case of Batman vs. Superman, though, we now know at least one of the rumored names was right: Josh Brolin.

The Goonies star confirmed to The Huffington Post that the studio had indeed been talking with his people on taking over the caped crusader. It sounds like things didn't get too far, though, because Brolin points out that he never actually talked to director Zack Snyder about it, meaning this was a deal that never really went beyond the studio/agent level.

Brolin isn't bitter about it, though. In fact, he's not only happy that Ben Affleck did land the gig, but that he hopes he's so good in the role it shuts up everyone on the Internet complaining about it.

"I've never seen such a global reaction in my life," Brolin said. "I feel for him, truly. I would not want to be him right now. The reaction becomes so personal," Brolin said. "It's like, 'Fuck this guy, I wish he was dead.' And you're like, 'What? Dude, seriously? This guy is just working like you are. He's doing the same thing you are. He's trying to make the best choices he can.'"

Still, Brolin wouldn't go so far as to say he's glad Affleck is in the hot seat rather than him. "I think I might have said that like 15 years ago, but now, because of the Internet, man, I just feel for anybody who gets lambasted at that level. I want him to kick ass and I want everyone to love it and kind of eat their words."

Good on you, Brolin. And yes, we too hope Affleck pulls a Heath Ledger and defies everyone's expectations.
