Inspired by the food-truck movement and creator of the gourmet Korean taco truck Kogi, Roy Choi, Jon Favreau’s Chef found the actor-director starring as a professional foodie who quits his job and rediscovers his passion for cooking after starting his own food-truck business selling Cubanos. He names it El Jefe. Choi worked closely with the director behind the scenes and helped promote the film by serving up El Jefe’s signature Cubano. Now it seems the sandwich’s popularity has inspired Favreau and Choi to possibly open an El Jefe restaurant.
“We're looking into ways of keeping the food aspect going,” the director stated. “So much is made of the Cubano sandwich as a plot point. It piques people's curiosity.” And in case you were worried about the food truck being overshadowed by the potential new joint, Favreau says: “It's not that the truck is truly gone. We're finding new ways to pop up and the truck may come back. I like to think of it as being in the Bat-cave, and Alfred is working on it.”
