John Lennon and Yoko Ono Biopic in the Works From 'Big Little Lies' Director; Here's Everything We Know

John Lennon and Yoko Ono Biopic in the Works From 'Big Little Lies' Director; Here's Everything We Know

Oct 23, 2018

We'll never have too many Beatles biopics. From the band's early days in Liverpool to their stint in Hamburg to the assassination of John Lennon, filmmakers continue to be fascinated with the stories of the Fab Four (and the former and unofficial band members, too). Now it's time for the relationship of Lennon and Yoko Ono to make its way to the big screen.

There was something to this effect in the '80s on British TV (featuring Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi as George Harrison) but now, according to Deadline, the Beatle and his bride are getting a truly prestige take on their life together from director Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club) and the screenwriter behind the upcoming music biopic Bohemian Rhapsody

Here's everything we know about the movie so far:

What's the title?

As of yet, there isn't one, but here's a good option for them to consider: "The Ballad of John & Yoko," which is also the name of a great Beatles song.

Who is starring as John and Yoko?

That, too, has yet to be determined.

What years will the movie cover?

No details have been revealed for the plot, and it's not based on anything in particular, but the story will likely cover Lennon and Ono's meeting in the mid-1960s, continuing through their relationship notoriously being the alleged cause of the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 and their own temporary separation in the mid-1970s, but the movie will reportedly conclude before Lennon's murder in 1980.

Who wrote the script?

Anthony McCarten, Oscar-nominated writer and producer of The Theory of Everything and Darkest Hour, penned the script. He has experience with music biopics, too, having worked on the screenplay for the Freddie Mercury and Queen movie Bohemian Rhapsody.

Who is directing the movie?

Jean-Marc Vallée, who has also been nominated for an Oscar (for co-editing his movie Dallas Buyers Club), is at the helm of the biopic. Lately, he's become better known for directing HBO drama series, such as Big Little Lies and this year's Sharp Objects. His last feature was 2015's Demolition. Apparently, he took himself out of the running to do the next James Bond movie to do this instead.

Will any of the Beatles be involved?

Neither of the surviving members of the Fab Four are attached, but Yoko Ono is one of the producers of the movie, partnering with McCarten, Josh Bratman (The Love Guru) and Oscar nominee Michael De Luca (The Social Network, Moneyball, Captain Phillips).

Will there be Beatles music on the soundtrack?

That would be assumed, but not a certainty. Deadline notes that negotiations are being made for Lennon's music to be included, but that would imply his solo efforts and maybe his collaborations with Ono only.

When will the movie come out?

Universal Pictures hasn't set a release date, but with this expected to be Vallée's next project, we'll hopefully get to see it hit theaters in just a couple years.
