Listen: John Hughes' Rare, Out-of-Print 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' Commentary

Listen: John Hughes' Rare, Out-of-Print 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' Commentary

Nov 26, 2012

If you currently own the 1999 DVD release of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, then congratulations -- you not only own the only Ferris DVD that still carries the director commentary, but you also own the only DVD commentary John Hughes ever recorded. For some reason --     rumors claim it was Hughes' decision -- the commentary has been left off subsequent DVD and Blu-ray releases, angering fans who remember it as being one of the best special features included on any of the John Hughes home video releases.

From a 1999 review of the DVD by Scott Ventura: "Hughes speaks with a deep, somber tone slightly reminiscent of Harold Ramis as he discusses locations, motivations, a few technical details, music choices, some deleted scenes and his personal disappointments with certain moments. Unlike director commentaries that stop at the beginning of the credits, Hughes goes right up to the last second, and almost sounds like he isn't finished when the movie ends."

For those who own a later version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off and would love to sync it up with the commentary, you can do so by using the audio below. Hopefully Paramount will bring this commentary back in a future release since, as one review states, it "now stands as his final public thoughts on his work." [via Cinephilia & Beyond]
