Mainstream horror movies don't have that much sex in them these days. Sure, there's always some eye candy -- a ripped guy allergic to shirts or a teen girl pushing the definition of shorts -- but the genre isn't as synonymous with sex appeal as it once was. That's probably because slashers have fallen in popularity in accordance with the return of ghosts and demons. So maybe we're due for a bit of a resurgence of the more titillating side of the genre.
That's what The Boy Next Door appears to be shooting for, at least. Jennifer Lopez has just signed on for the film, where she'll play a single mom who starts an affair with her son's new teenaged friend. Things get appropriately hot and heavy, but then when she comes to her senses and tries to break it off, the boy next door snaps.
Jason Blum (Sinister, Insidious) is producing, and he's currently in talks with Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) to direct. We don't know what kind of rating they'll be going for (Blumhouse does both R and PG-13 horror), but we have to imagine that The Boy Next Door is going to be pushing Lopez' sex appeal hard to turn this into a new teen-thriller classic. And as strange as it seems to say, throwing some sex back into horror movies, even if it's just a little bit, may end up paying off big. It's been missing for years, and it's kind of surprising to see it being brought back with someone as high profile as Jennifer Lopez.
