Jeff Bridges Teases ‘Tron 3’ and His Return to the MCU

Aug 09, 2017

Jeff Bridges hasn’t done a lot of sequels. There’s Texasville, the follow-up to The Last Picture Show, and Tron: Legacy, and now he’s joining the Kingsman series for next month's sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

He’s never been against doing sequels. In a new interview with Uproxx, he explains that he expected to do Starman 2 but the movie continued as a TV series instead. And he had no idea The Big Lebowski was spinning off without him into the upcoming movie Going Places. However, he says of the idea of him ever reprising his role as that iconic title character:

You know, there’s so many rumors about Lebowski, that they’re going to remake him, and so I hear those like everybody else. I get excited, but they all turn out to be rumors. I don’t think the [Coen] brothers are going to make another one. Who knows? You never know, though.

He also would have loved to have returned for more Iron Man movies or other installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He tells Uproxx that he didn’t expect his villainous character, Obadiah Stane, to die in the first Iron Man because his script hinted otherwise:

In the script, the script that I hired onto, my character lives! They open my suit up and I’m gone...But then when we got to shoot that scene, they didn’t open my suit up! I said, “Aren’t you going to open my suit up?” They said, “No.” I said, “You’re going to kill my guy?” And they say, “Well, it’s a comic book. You could come back. Who knows?” You know? But anyway....Who knows? They might bring him back, maybe they’re right. It’s a comic book and anything in comic book land can happen. So who knows?

As for one of the franchises he did already return for, Bridges teased an update on the status of Tron 3 in an interview for Entertainment Weekly’s Sirius XM radio show. It’s hard to tell if his proposal is something that’s actually being planned or has been discussed, but he hints that he’s not sure what he can reveal yet:

I hope that happens. I think Joe [Kosinski]’s got the script and everything, you know. Yeah, I don’t know that I’m supposed to talk about it or not. I don’t know. It should be the first virtual reality movie, you know? Wouldn’t that be cool…to see Tron in that world?

It’s already been seven years since the release of Joseph Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy, though that doesn’t matter since that sequel arrived 28 years after the original Tron. In the time since Legacy, we've heard about a third movie being in the works, and about it being cancelled. However, this year has brought word, even from Kosinski himself, about a possible resurrection of the project.

Hopefully we’ll hear more soon, including on the chance of Jared Leto coming aboard. In the meantime, Bridges is ready. And we’re also ready to see more of the actor in more movies, whether he’s back as a character we’ve seen before or someone new.
