The third installment in The Expendables film series is readying for an August 15, 2014 release. Principal photography started in Bulgaria, where one story from the set made us cringe like crazy. It seems that star Jason Statham, who plays knife expert Lee Christmas in the film, almost drowned while performing a stunt in the action sequel. It happened while Statham was driving a truck along the Black Sea. His brakes gave out and the vehicle went off road and into the water. "He literally is supposed to stop the truck, we get out, we shoot the whole thing. The truck doesn't stop. The truck goes over the dock, into the Black Sea with Jason Statham driving. He's in the water, in the truck. We were freaking out, everybody's screaming," costar Terry Crews (Hale Ceasar in the movie) told audiences on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Everyone survived and walked away unscathed, but the truck was left in the bottom of the sea. The story is a sobering reminder that although these guys seem invincible on the big screen, anything can happen while filming. The fact that many of them put their own lives at risk performing their own stunts is a pretty big deal, and we're thankful for the action-packed results.
In other Expendables news, check out a photo that star Dolph Lundgren shared from the set. "The end of Week Two on EX3. Just rescued Wesley and blew up a chopper," the actor writes. Alright you old geezers, you don't have to ask us to see this movie twice.
