The Drug Lord Instagram Pics That May Have Inspired Jared Leto's Joker

Jun 16, 2016

Clearly the creation of Jared Leto's version of the Joker in this summer's Suicide Squad is a hot topic, what with more unusual behind-the-scenes stories emerging with each passing week. From remaining in character throughout the entire production to sending cast members weird and creepy gifts (like dead animals), Leto's Joker is without a doubt one of the year's most anticipated movie characters.

And his story keeps getting stranger.

According to director David Ayer, he wanted a real-world version of Joker, creating someone who he feels could actually exist in our modern world. And for inspiration, he turned to the Instagram accounts of drug lords. Ayer tells Yahoo...

"A lot of it has to do with creating a character with some kind of history and footprint in our world. And not have this sacrosanct being outside of our continuum, our reality. If a guy like him really existed today, where would he come from? How would he do business? Who would he know? What would he look like? In my mind, I took a lot of inspiration from drug lords on Instagram. It’s a great way to understand the lifestyle of a villain."

So how do you actually go about finding drug lords on Instagram? Well, perhaps Ayer -- who spent a lot of time as a kid on the streets of South Central, Los Angeles, using those experiences to help fuel movies like Training DayHarsh Times and End of Watch -- is a guy who knows exactly where to look. Also, a quick search yielded pics that circulated awhile back, apparently belonging to the Instagram accounts of the drug lords themselves and their children.

One look at some of these pics and you instantly see how they could've inspired aspects of Leto's Joker.

Like his ride.

Here are some of the drug lord Instagram pics...

And here's a video detailing Joker's car in the film.

Ayer told Yahoo that all of Joker's tattoos, as well as his teeth, tell the character's story, teasing a body full of Easter eggs for fans to dissect. One thing many of these drug lord images have in common is the inclusion of gold, such as this collection of gold-plated weaponry.

And guess who's seen firing a gold-plated gun in the Suicide Squad trailer. Yup, there he is.

Or what about the drug lord who wears his shirts in such a way that most of his bare chest is sticking out. Like this guy, who posted a ton of pics to Instagram to show off and subsequently got caught.

The Joker rocks a very similar look.

Drug lords also seem fond of posting pics of scantily clad women holding giant weapons.

The Joker is also a fan of scantily clad women holding big, long weapons.

One thing almost every drug lord needs to have in his (or her) collection is a large cat. No, not like a house cat that's just fat cause it eats a lot -- we're talking lions and tigers. Drug lords adore them as pets it seems, based on these pics...

We haven't seen enough of Leto's Joker to know whether he's hiding some large beast back at the condo, but since this is such a common theme among drug lords, we wouldn't be surprised if a lion or tiger or killer croc is being housed inside Joker's evil den, just waiting for the right opportunity to strike.

With recent set photos of a tattooed Common appearing online, rumors are spreading that his character may actually give us that final connection to these drug lords of Instagram. That's because if fans are correct, Common is playing a guy named -- wait for it -- bronze tiger.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5.

p.s. We do not recommend following drug lords on social media, but we do recommend you watch this rad trailer for Suicide Squad below.
