There's been a flurry of news surrounding Avengers: Age of Ultron this week with regard to who will be playing the legendary villain Ultron. Due to some concept videos and previous quotes, many fansites were piecing together clues and claiming Paul Bettany (who voiced Jarvis in the Iron Man movies) would return to tackle Ultron in a storyline that could see Tony Stark's robotic assistant going bad. Today Marvel decided to wisely squash those rumors by announcing that character actor James Spader would instead be taking on the role of Ultron.
It doesn't say whether Spader will just voice Ultron, or if he'll be involved in some kind of motion-capture situation as well. What this does point to, however, is that Bettany's Jarvis probably won't be the one who turns bad, or if he does he won't be the one who ultimately becomes Ultron.
Spader, meanwhile, is so great at playing weird and menacing with darkly comedic tendencies. Here he is in one of our favorite Spader performances, opposite Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secretary. This role pretty much hit all of Spader's best notes.
Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives in theaters on May 1, 2015. What do you think of the casting?
