Happy birthday, James Cameron! The Avatar director turns 59 today. We're celebrating with this three-part Visionaries video essay that explores his career as an artist, director and innovator. The Canadian-born filmmaker was a self-professed nerd in high school, fascinated by science, art and how the two could be united. In the clips, Cameron shares several paintings he created in his early years that show the seeds of his future films, including his magnum opus Avatar.
We also get to see a little bit of Cameron's spiritual/mystical side as he discusses the importance of dreams in his creative process. The Titanic filmmaker also mentions super producer and B-movie king Roger Corman, who gave Cameron his start as a director. The video takes us from Cameron's film sets, to his deep-sea explorations, to the indigenous communities he has supported since making Avatar, which he says changed his priorities in life. He discusses his desire for artistic, technical and physical challenges, which we're grateful for since it means Cameron's wheels are constantly turning in order to bring us more innovative and adventurous films.
Enjoy this video series, and feel free to drop us a line about your favorite Cameron films in honor of the director's birthday.
