'Aliens' Director James Cameron Reviews 'Prometheus,' Talks Moviegoing Habits

Sep 13, 2012

Sometimes it's hard to look at a filmmaker like James Cameron as a huge movie buff just like you. Mainly because he's this major personality who has two movies sitting atop the highest grossing films of all time list, but also because we're so consumed with what he's currently working on, we don't really step back to get his thoughts on anything else... like what he had for dinner last night, or the last movie he saw in a theater. One thing folks have been curious about was Cameron's thoughts on Ridley Scott's return to the Alien universe in Prometheus. Had Cameron, who directed Aliens, seen the film? Did he like it?

Speaking to Moviefone, Cameron revealed that he not only saw Prometheus, but he saw it twice and once on opening day. He says, "I enjoyed Prometheus; I thought it was great. I thought it was Ridley returning to science fiction with gusto, with great tactical performance, beautiful photography, great native 3D. There might have been a few things that I would have done differently, but that’s not the point, you could say that about any movie."

Kind of seems like the reaction most of us had as general moviegoers. Cameron later spoke about his movie-watching process, specifically when it came to Prometheus. "Prometheus is a film I saw twice, and I thought about it ahead of time. The first time I would just enjoy it, go for the ride, not be too analytical and the second time I would allow myself to be a little more analytical about, you know, where the lights were and how they lit the shots with all the people in the helmets, how they probably had to do CG faceplates like we did on Avatar, things like that. But, sometimes, so that I preserve a fun, fan-like viewing experience, I won’t get into that level. I’ll just go for the ride, like, consciously."

We kinda dig the fact that Cameron consciously decides how he's going to watch a movie before he watches it, going so far as to create a plan in his head, like he did with Prometheus. It's a very nerdy thing to do, and as a fan you appreciate it when filmmakers talk about how they experience films because it helps feed your own experiences of their films.

That being said, we'd still love to know what Cameron would've done differently with Prometheus. Unfortunately he's not going there, but he did say he won't be returning to that world. "No, I feel that I’m too far away from it right now, too much other work has been done -- too thickly layered, a palimpsest of other talents from Fincher to everybody that’s come along since."

James Cameron fans will get to experience his next film however they want when Avatar 2 hits theaters sometime in 2014 or 2015. Meanwhile, Ridley Scott is currently plotting out his plan for a Prometheus sequel.
