International Trailer Domination Tour: 'New Kids Turbo,' Danish Action, Indian Superheroes and Indonesian Arthouse

Oct 14, 2011

Twitch Film and Movies.com once again present the International Trailer Domination Tour, a selection of the best trailers from upcoming international films. Up this week we've got the follow up to Fantastic Fest hit New Kids Turbo, a double shot from Denmark, an Indian superhero and impressive arthouse drama from Indonesia.

1. The Dancer by Ifa Isfansyah, Indonesia

We begin in Indonesia with Ifa Isfansyah's sophomore feature The Dancer. Isfansyah is considered one of the leaders of Indonesia's young generation of filmmakers and it's easy to see why with this one, The Dancer showing an unusual ability to set a small scale intimate story - it's a star-crossed romance at it's core - against a much larger, more epic backdrop. The production values are top notch, the performances look excellent, and the film has just the right balance of drama, action and exoticism to make it a hit on the festival circuit.

2. ID:A by Christian E Christiansen, Denmark

Denmark's Christian E Christiansen scored a minor Hollywood hit with The Roommate early this year and he's headed back to Denmark to build on that success with action-thriller ID:A. The film boils down to a spin on amnesia / forgotten identity motifs, revolving around a woman who wakes up in a river badly injured and not knowing who she is or why she is in possession of a bag full of money and a gun. Cue action. Christiansen looks to pull it all off with style in the brand new theatrical trailer.

3. Ra.One by Anubhav Sinha, India

The Indian holiday of Diwali is rapidly approaching and that means it's big movie season in the nation that produces more movies than any other in the world. And in the upcoming clash of big stars and big budgets none looms larger than Anubhav Sinha's high octane superhero picture Ra.One. Shah Rukh Khan stars as a wholly original Indian superhero in the film that aims to be a local answer to the high polish gloss of Hollywood's Marvel backed hero flicks. And it just might do it.

4. Beast by Christoffer Boe, Denmark

Denmark's Christoffer Boe has, in my opinion, long been one of the most intriguing and underrated directors on the global scene. Boe has a gift for twisting genre conventions and working them into his stories in surprisingly realistic ways and, as a result, tends to be overlooked by arthouse fans who find him to weird and by genre fans who find him too arthouse. I just find him brilliant. His latest effort casts Nicolas Bro and Nikolaj Lie Kaas as the male prongs of a love triangle on the verge of getting nasty with Bro nursing a hatred that threatens to explode in violence.

5. New Kids Nitro by Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, The Netherlands

Fantastic Fest audiences got a tasste of the New Kids phenomenon this year with the sketch comedy troupe's debut feature New Kids Turbo winning much love at the festival. It's a parade of relentless stupidity, basically, the troupe's five members playing a quintet of losers pretty much embodying all that was bad about the nineties with their misbehavior eventually resulting in government backed military strikes against them and all out warfare. It's hysterically funny and so popular that it smashed Dutch box office records and so, of course, they're now back with a sequel. Bigger and more tasteless than last time out New Kids Nitro looks like every bit as much fun as the first one.
