Masters of the Universe

At last! A new, big-screen version of beloved 1980s fan favorite Masters of the Universe is moving forward. The original animated television series, inspired by the Mattel toy line, ruled the world in the 1980s. That led to a live-action film, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (above), which was certainly memorable.

Sony Pictures and Mattel have now decided to infuse the upcoming new version with some indie spirit. Aaron Nee and Adam Nee have been hired to direct, according to Variety. Who are they and what could this mean for our beloved He-Man?

Who are the Nee Brothers?

Aaron Nee and Adam Nee (above in Band of Robbers), aka The Brothers Nee and the Nee Brothers, have collaborated together on short and feature films, as well as music videos, for years. They received positive notice for their distinctive debut feature, The Last Romantic, made on a tiny budget.

More recently, they teamed to make the acclaimed comic adventure Band of Robbers, which imagined Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn as grown-ups still searching for lost treasure.

Wasn't someone else already tapped to direct?

David S. Goyer was touted for the job back in December 2017. His many credits as a writer include Man of Steel and Batman Begins; he's also directed several feature films, including The Unborn and Blade: Trinity. However, Variety reports: "Prior engagements forced him to pass on directing, though insiders say he is extremely involved in the development of the film."

Do we have any idea what tone the new version will be aiming for?

Fans can rest easy, taking comfort in the knowledge that Goyer wrote the latest draft of the screenplay. His body of work speaks to the serious consideration he gives to his characters, even when they're doing outlandish or freakish things.

Judging just by the two trailers above, it looks like the Nee Brothers will be bringing a fresh perspective to the project, but that doesn't mean we should expect a comedy. Instead, they will likely have good ideas in mind to stage the script that Goyer has written, and film it in a breezier manner than non-fans might expect from a movie that features the most powerful man in the universe, He-Man, as its protagonist.

Has Masters of the Universe been scheduled for release?

Yes, it has. We can look forward to seeing the movie in theaters on December 18, 2019.
