'The Image Revolution' Shows the Moment Some of the Biggest Names in Comics Turned Their Backs on Marvel

Dec 10, 2013

December of 1991 will always be a special month in comic book history – if only because it was when superhero fanatics learned that some of the biggest creators in the industry were breaking away from Marvel to form their very own imprint – renegade company Image Comics.

Now, we get an opportunity to relive those heady days with the documentary The Image Revolution.

Set to be the definitive retelling of the upstart company’s formation, the new documentary features interviews with pretty much everyone involved in the birth of the company – including Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld. The film’s already being hailed as a “must watch” for comic geeks.

As someone who was really into comics during that era, I can remember the buzz and excitement that surrounded the Image launch – and how rocky those first few years were. While the books were wildly popular, it was not uncommon for the latest issues to miss their release dates by months. Some wondered if “allowing the inmates to run the asylum” was really such a good idea, but with Image having survived for 21 years now, it seems safe to say that things worked out.

Check out a clip from the film below wherein Rob Liefeld describes (complete with voice impersonations) how Todd McFarlane and a group of comic legends broke the news to Marvel.

The revolution will be televised (courtesy of your favorite On Demand services) later this month.
