Retro cinema nostalgia is apparently “in” in the movie biz after The Artist took home Oscar gold, and now there’s not one, but two, films in production chronicling the legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock.
The bigger of the two, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, hasn’t started filming yet – but boasts an excellent cast headlined by Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Scarlett Johansson in key roles. Meanwhile, the BBC’s 90-minute drama The Girl – which focuses on Hitchcock’s obsessive relationship with Tippi Hedren – has already gone before cameras.
Today we bring you the first photo from the set of The Girl, courtesy of the folks over at IndieWire. That’s actor Toby Jones as Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Hedren. We have to say we’re not entirely sold on Jones as Hitchcock – his face and head just look…wrong. Swing by IndieWire and compare the new photo with the classic shot that inspired it and we think you’ll agree.
Of course, one doesn’t have to be a doppelganger of a famous person to portray them convincingly onscreen – and perhaps Jones really nails Hitchcock’s personality and mannerisms and makes the part work. We’ll have to wait and see if that’s the case, but we’re looking forward to checking out The Girl – whenever the BBC finally decides to debut it.
