One of the more impressive aspects of The Dark Knight was its complicated viral marketing campaign, full of Joker riddles, newspaper articles, Gotham City websites and so much more. Fans could live inside their little viral world for days and weeks leading up to the release, and there was a lot of fun backstory stuff to help fill in the pieces missing from the film's storyline. We're not sure what Warner Bros. has planned for The Dark Knight Rises, except it looks to be starting with this fake CIA memo that was "leaked" to Wired (via IGN) featuring a person named Dr. Leonid Pavel (played by Israeli actor Alon Abutbul in the film, who was cast as a "mad scientist").
The memo itself is searching for a missing Russian nuclear official who knows his way around nuclear fuel cycle technology and reactor design. Seeing as the Dark Knight Rises prologue is arriving in IMAX theaters in front of Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol next week -- coupled with the fact that said prologue will introduce the film's villain, Bane (Tom Hardy) -- we're going to go out on a limb and say this Russian scientist has something to do with Bane. Perhaps he's the one who creates the suit that helps keep Bane alive? Don't know, but we should find out real soon since we expect more of these clues to start arriving online in the hopes they'll keep us intrigued enough until the film drops this July 20th.
