If You're a Wes Anderson Fan, You Need to Watch This

Mar 14, 2014

If you’re a Wes Anderson fan, then you’ve probably already made the trek to the mountainside retreat in the director’s recently released Grand Budapest Hotel. The filmmaker’s brand of whimsy is an addictive thing, but there’s plenty more to share in this mini doc that explores the filmmaker’s movie and commercial work.

Our own Erik Davis found the video gem on Filmmaker IQ, and the 10-minute clip takes us through a nice primer of Anderson’s shooting style, costume and prop choices, the use of music, and more. If you were wondering how Anderson constructs some of his single-shot passages, the short illustrates the setup of the filmmaker’s revolving platform that takes us instantly from scene to scene — in this case, viewed through one of Anderson’s commercials.

What’s most fun about the short is the use of playful animation to demonstrate Anderson’s camerawork, which is featured alongside the live-action footage for comparison. Get your Anderson fix with this informative, but fun documentary.
