Idris Elba Says the Expansion of Asgard in 'Thor 2' Will Be Huge

Aug 31, 2012

For our money Idris Elba is one of the best parts of Thor. His role as Heimdall, the all-seeing guardian of the Bifrost bridge entry to Asgard, was fleeting, but even with just a handful of minutes of screen time he stood out in every scene. That's why it's fantastic news that Elba is not only returning for Thor: The Dark World, but that he told the Examiner his role is being expanded as well.

Here's what he also had to say to the outlet about the sequel:

"In the new film we're going to get to know Heimdall the Asgardian a bit better, and we're going to get to know Asgard a bit better. I can't say too much, but the expansion of Thor in his world is going to be huge."

That certainly sounds to us like The Dark World, the big screen debut of veteran TV director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), will be spending even more time away from Earth than Kenneth Branagh's first film did; news we also happily welcome. We love the Earth-bound stories of the other Marvel characters, but considering how big their superhero universe is, it's great to know that they're branching out and allowing for some of the more eclectic elements to shine through.

And while we're talking about Thor 2, a few British fans of the franchise have been snapping pics of a set currently being constructed in the Bourne Woods in the U.K. If the tree line looks familiar, it's because that forest has also been used twice by Ridley Scott for Gladiator and Robin Hood, as well as Children of Men, The Wolfman, Band of Brothers, Snow White and the Huntsman and quite a few more Hollywood productions.

This particular image comes from a Reddit user, though Superhero Hype has quite a few more from different angles. As for its purpose in the film, the verdant look of it perhaps places it as the home of villain Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston), the ruler of the Dark Elves. We'll find out when Thor: The Dark World hits theaters on November 8, 2013.
