Idris Elba Takes the Lead Role in 'Pacific Rim'

Idris Elba

We still don't know a ton about Guillermo del Toro's next film, Pacific Rim, as far as plot goes (it was first called a giant monster movie, now it's been referred to as an alien invasion film), but at least Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures have been making enough casting announcements to keep the project on the tip of everyone's tongue (Charlie Day being the most recent actor linked to the film).  And now, according to Deadline, the director and the studio have agreed on their lead: Idris Elba.

Elba will be playing the role originally intended for Tom Cruise, which no doubt means this will be the British actor's highest profile role to date.  And if you ask us, that's a great thing.  Elba is the kind of actor that, once you discover, you go out of your way to see movies and TV shows solely because he's in them.  He just has a magnetic presence, whether he's hustling as The Wire's Stringer Bell or he's gazing off into the cosmos glad in golden armor in Thor.  If you see his name listed in a cast, it's at least a guarantee that the movie won't be a total waste of your time.

Not that that was ever a concern with Pacific Rim.  After all, we're talking about an original sci-fi project directed by the man who gave the world Pan's Labyrinth.  It's already got a pedigree that demands your attention, Idris Elba in his first leading role of a high-profile studio film is just icing on top of the cake.

In honor of his casting, we tip our hat to Stringer Bell, who was always too smart for the game.  Warning NSFW language abounds.
