Aug 16, 2011

Have you ever stopped to wonder about the history of the vibrator, when it was invented, who it was invented by and how society reacted to such a device?  No?  Perfectly understandable.  It's one of those magical devices whose origin you never really think about.  But never again will you have to dread the topic of the invention of the vibrator coming up at cocktail parties.  Thanks to Tanya Wexler's Hysteria, you'll soon know all about this 100+ year old wonder.

Yes, the electromechnical vibrator is over 100 years old, and, yes, Hysteria is a period piece film about its invention at the turn of the 19th century.  It stars Hugh Dancy, Rupert Everett, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Felicity Jones and Jonathan Pryce and actually looks like quite charming, especially if find British period films to be typically stuffy.  The King's Speech, this ain't.

Thanks to Film School Rejects for the find.
