Monster Rumor: Hulk Set to Play Major Role in Marvel's Phase 3 Plans

Planet Hulk

The biggest superhero news to emerge in the wake of the Super Bowl isn’t that new Iron Man 3 trailer – it’s a reveal of Marvel’s blueprint for Phase Three of its quest for box office domination. There are some massive (but completely effing awesome) SPOILERS AHEAD. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

El Mayimbe from over at Latino Review has brought us the scoop of all scoops when it comes to Marvel’s plans for the future, and if you love the Green Goliath better known as the Incredible Hulk, this news is going to make your day.

Marvel’s made two attempts to give the Hulk his own franchise already, and neither version has really worked for fans. Hopefully the third time’s the charm, because Bruce Banner is going to get another shot at a franchise when Marvel adapts Planet Hulk and World War Hulk as part of the third phase of its motion-picture plan. That’s right, according to his sources, Marvel’s going to take two of the most popular and awesome Hulk comics on the market and make them into films. If Hulk doesn’t catch on after this, there’s no hope for the character to carry his own film series. These books are awesome and should make for fantastic movies. If you love “Hulk smash!” this is like a dream come true.

How will Marvel set all of this up? It’s quite simple, really.

According to Latino Review, the plan is to have the Illuminati (a group of Marvel heroes, not the ones that allegedly run the universe…) deem Hulk (who will be played by Mark Ruffalo) a grave danger to us all. As such, they shoot him into outer space, where he hits a wormhole and lands on an alien planet. On this planet, Hulk does what he does best – smash puny things -- by becoming a gladiator and later king.

Then, Avengers 3 will see Hulk and his followers return to Earth – and Hulk is not happy about being sent to space. Naturally, Hulk will square off against his former friends the Avengers, and it will most assuredly be epic.

Now, this is all early insider buzz – and we’re years away from this stuff starting production, so things can certainly change. There’s a potential rights issue with the Illuminati (Professor X, Beast and Mr. Fantastic are all members, but also set up over at Fox – meaning there’d have to be a deal to get them in a Disney/Marvel film or they have to be cut from the group), but those issues should be resolvable.

Film School Rejects also raises an interesting point about what this would mean for Guillermo del Toro’s Hulk-based TV series. Will ABC and Marvel move ahead with plans to launch that show to build up the Hulk for his new movies? Will they ask del Toro to be involved given that he’s set to be involved with the series? We have no answers or even guesses at this point, but these are all things that bear watching as we move ahead through Phase Two.

At any rate, this is some seriously big news – and we’ll undoubtedly be bringing you more details in the near future. In the meantime, let us know what you think. Are you ready for more Hulk? Have you had a chance to check out Planet Hulk and World War Hulk? If you did, do you think Marvel can do the stories justice on the screen? Geek out with us in the comment section below.
