Saying what is and is not a spoiler is a tricky thing. For instance, if some jerk tells you ahead of time about a major, game-changing plot twist in a film, it would absolutely be a spoiler, right? But what if that jerk happens to be the movie studio and its dropping the twist bomb right in the trailer? Is that still a spoiler?
It seems strange to be talking so cautiously about spoilers in the trailer for a sequel to an animated kids movie about Vikings and dragons, but hey, How to Train Your Dragon was one of the most pleasant animated surprises in recent years, so we're very excited to see what happens with the sequel. And that's why we're scratching our heads a bit at something that's in the trailer for part two that really seems like something you'd think they'd keep out.
So, if you happen to be extra particular and would love to know absolutely nothing about How to Train Your Dragon 2, stop reading now, don't watch the below trailer, and hope you can avoid all further marketing between now and June 13, 2014. If you couldn't really care less, here it is:
Okay, now that you've watched it, isn't it a little strange that they're already revealing the mysterious figure who seems to control an army of dragons is Hiccup's mother (voiced by Cate Blanchett)? Maybe it's not so surprising in the movie. Maybe it happens 10 minutes in. But we still can't get over thinking some little kids out there would have their mind totally blown by this moment in theaters, and now... not so much.
As for the rest of the movie, it looks promising. It's nice to see the world has changed because of the events of the first film, and they're avoiding the same "this thing we feared may not be so scary" territory by introducing a new threat for the Vikings and the dragons to unite against.
