Coco

Disney Pixar’s Coco hits theaters on Wednesday, just in time for families enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday together. This entertainment option will also be extended to Spanish-speaking families who might not speak or understand English. Before we explore the details of this exhibition model, let’s review the significance of Coco as a film.

The story follows Miguel, a 12-year-old Mexican boy who dreams of becoming a musician. The only problem is his family banned music and he must trek through the Land of the Dead in hopes of changing his fate. It's set during Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday reserved for honoring deceased loved ones.

Coco is practically tailor-made for Mexican audiences. In fact, the film opened in Mexico on October 27, just in time for Día de Muertos, and has been performing extraordinarily well there, demonstrated by an almost unheard of 12% increase in its second weekend. Spanish-speaking moviegoers living in the United States wanting to experience Coco on the big screen have not one, but two options:

First, Pixar posted a list of all showings en español, which includes either Spanish dubbed or subtitled screenings.

Second, if interested parties do not have a participating theater nearby, they can take advantage of the app TheaterEars. Simply download the app and the audio track of your choice before you go to the theater. Once the show begins, put on your headphones and activate the app. TheaterEars utilizes your phone’s microphone to sync up the audio so you don’t have to!

This is exciting and welcome technology that I hadn’t heard of before. I’ve had experiences in the past where TheaterEars would’ve been a godsend. It’s heartening to see Pixar and Coco director Lee Unkrich keeping the audience in mind. We can only hope that this attention and care becomes a mainstay going forward.

Coco hits theaters on Wednesday, November 22.
