Steven Soderbergh’s film Magic Mike, about sensitive beefcake dancer Mike Lane and based on the real-life exploits of former male-revue-fleshpot-turned-actor Channing Tatum, became a sensation in 2012. The film grossed $167 million worldwide and launched its lead into stardom. Since then, the stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold story has been bandied about with regards to a sequel and a Broadway musical. Collider brings word that part two of Tatum’s tale (he’s been writing the script this go-round) is moving forward and will possibly head before the cameras later this year. During press rounds for Sabotage, star Joe Manganiello (who played stud Big Dick Richie in the first film) gave up the goods:

“Yeah, it’s gonna happen this fall. I think they’re going to announce it soon. It’s crazy. I didn’t think that would be my first franchise. I never thought that would ever be the direction of my career. But that said, it’s just proof that I don’t know best, all the time. It was the most fun I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to get back in and mix it up with those guys.”

IMDb tells us that part deux will simply be “the continuing story of male stripper Magic Mike.” Tatum has hinted it will be a “road-trip movie,” with more oiled-up bodies and lighter on the serious stuff — “essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be.” We’re not sure yet if that’s a good or bad thing, so we’ll reserve judgment until the cast and crew start to firm up (ahem). Soderbergh’s busy languishing in semiretirement, and Tatum suggested he might direct at one point, but it’s still anyone’s gig at this point.

UPDATE: According to The Playlist, Magic Mike 2 will be directed by longtime Steven Soderbergh collaborator Greg Jacobs, who's worked behind the scenes alongside Soderbergh on several of the filmmaker's movies, as well as his upcoming TV show The Knick. Additionally, the sequel will be called Magic Mike XXL versus, say, Magic Mike 2. The site also adds that most of the cast is expected back, though no deals are set yet. Filming will begin later this year.

UPDATE 2: Warner Bros. has officially scheduled Magic Mike XXL for release on July 3, 2015
