Here Are Your 39 Eligible Tracks for the Best Original Song Oscar

Dec 20, 2011

Oscar StatueOur least favorite Oscar category is arguably the one for Best Original Song. We don’t have any issue with composers and songwriters being acknowledged for their work (there have been some good songs nominated in this category over the years…), but we definitely hate that the Academy stages a musical sequence wherein each song is performed. The Oscar telecast is already bloated and overdone – these numbers just add to the problem.

To get you ready for this year’s endless spectacle, the Academy has announced the 39 eligible songs for the Best Original Song category. Aside from tracks from The Muppets and Captain America: The First Avenger’s “Star Spangled Man,” we don’t really remember most of these tunes – and we see a lot of flicks around here. Check out the full list of potential nominees below.

From this list, Academy voters from the Music branch will select up to five nominees – with no more than two nominees coming from a single film. Voters will be shown each song (in random order) then assign it a point rating. That averaged score is then compared against a baseline score of 8.25 – if nothing gets higher than 8.25, there’s no award given for that year. If more than five songs surpass that mark, the highest scores are the nominees. No wonder they need an accounting firm to help with this stuff…

Peruse the list and let us know what you want to see performed live on the show. This seems like a prime opportunity to get The Muppets on the stage after the who #muppetoscars movement failed to land them the hosting gig…
