In a new interview with IFTN (Irish Film and Television Network), The Avengers cinematographer Seamus McGarvey reveals that he shot parts of the upcoming superhero team-up blockbuster with an iPhone, going to far as to say that some of the iPhone footage is actually in the newly-released trailer.
He says, "The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film."
Immediately a lot of folks assumed he shot said footage with the iPhone 4S, but that just hit the market and the stuff in the trailer was filmed over the summer. So unless he somehow got his hands on an iPhone 4S a month or two before everyone else, the scenes in question were most likely filmed with an iPhone 4.
Unfortunately he didn't say which scenes he played around with on the iPhone, but considering how small it is and how easy it is to move around, we imagine these were scenes that were right up in the face of the action. Watch the trailer below, and let us know which scenes you think were shot with the iPhone ...
UPDATE: According to a new story over at THR, McGarvey was misquoted in the original article, and now says nothing in The Avengers was shot using an iPhone. He tells them, "I was talking about how up and coming film makers have access to a whole range of new technologies which expand our options as filmmakers. I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel's The Avengers movie. Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true."
