Guy Ritchie has already updated one classic literary character for the 21st century with his two entertaining Sherlock Holmes films, and now he’s set to tackle yet another beloved book in his next project: Robert Louis Stevenson’s pirate story, Treasure Island.
Deadline reports that the director will produce and helm the film, which features a script from Alex Harakis. The story has been a staple of children’s literature for years – offering up a tale of pirates, buried treasure, and moral ambiguity. No word yet on who will join the cast, but someone is going to get to channel their inner Johnny Depp and play the role of Long John Silver.
It’s too early to make any kind of judgment about an adaptation of Treasure Island, but if a big-screen version is in the works, we can think of few directors more suited for the gig than Ritchie. We’ll bring you more on this story as details emerge.
In the meantime, let us know who you think would make a great Long John Silver in this updated take on the classic tale.
