Gone are the days when young lovers would slave for hours over the intricate construction of an awesome mixtape, complete with attached note on looseleaf paper that read something like, "Will you go steady with me? Check yes or no." These days those young lovers can whip up a mixtape in seconds on Spotify or iTunes, which we're sure is still meaningful for its intended receiver, but lacks some of those adorable rough edges cassette tapes provided.
However, the mixtape is making a comeback this summer, and surprisingly it's via a Marvel superhero movie. In honor of its lead character Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord, aka Chris Pratt), Guardians of the Galaxy has revealed quite the bitchin' soundtrack full of the kind of throwback tunes that would make any child of the '80s proud.
Here it is, courtesy of a Spotify playlist MTV put together.
What's fun about this soundtrack (other than the fact that we actually created a playlist very similar to this one not that long ago) is that the idea of it is directly tied to the movie's lead character, who left the planet Earth at a very young age with just a Walkman and this mixtape as his only memories of a home he no longer knows. It's rare that a movie's soundtrack feels so personally connected to its main character, but because it is you're actually able to become more invested in Quill knowing he chose these particular songs for his mixtape. Plus, we're sure the songs also play to themes and moments in the movie, adding another dorky level of awesome to the whole thing.
So as you listen to these fly tunes, feel free to unleash your inner Star-Lord. And then go see Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1.
