Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy hasn’t even hit theaters here in America yet, but director James Gunn is already making elaborate plans for the sequel.
The filmmaker recently teased what fans can expect from the next installment in a recent interview with Film Divider. The new story will, at the very least, feature more of Peter Quill’s father, Yondu (pictured below), and Nebula, says Gunn.
“Kevin Feige has stuff. I wrote up a lot. He knows all the stuff and if I died tomorrow they could go make a movie. They could write the story of Peter Quill’s father and it would all be there. I think Yondu is a very important character, a really important character in this universe, and I think Nebula is really important too and so I think we’ll see more of both of those characters.”
That’s good news. The bad news is we’ll probably be waiting at least three years before we get to watch it, since the film has already been slated for a July 28, 2017 release date.
Marvel hints at Avengers 3 release date
Speaking of sequels that are a long way off, Marvel’s already announced that it'll release three films in 2018, but haven’t said what films they will be. Marvel boss Kevin Feige may have spilled the beans on one feature, though – Avengers 3.
The third film in the series looks likely to get the coveted May 4, 2018 release slot and kick off the summer box office season. Here’s Feige’s quote on the topic:
“Well, we haven't really talked about what we'd see Avengers 3. I presume we'd like to stick to three years between Avengers movies like we did [between the first and second]. So it will probably be three years between Avengers 2 and Avengers 3."
With Age of Ultron due next summer… well, you do the math. [via Comic Book Resources]
Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers crossover plans
Finally, we wrap things up with a bit of news that ties everything here together – a potential crossover between The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
James Gunn and the cast recently chatted about the potential for Earth’s mightiest heroes teaming up with the galaxies biggest group of misfits, and everyone seems to think it’s a matter of when the crossover happens – not if.
Vin Diesel on the issue:
“We talked about all sorts of possibilities [for a crossover] and I kind of know what the basic plan is. It could always change at any minute. That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But, we do inhabit the same universe and they’re pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other.”
Gunn also sees the potential in a crossover – although he suspects the two teams wouldn’t get along very well.
“I do not think the Avengers would get on well with the Guardians, the Guardians are like a bunch of jerks, really. The Avengers, for all their problems, they’re all do-gooders. And our guys are not do-gooders.”
What do you guys think? Are you ready for Marvel to start crossing over teams or are you happy with the minor cameos? Watch the cast tackle the topic below.
