We’re just under two months away from seeing if James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be Marvel’s latest blockbuster, but it’s never too soon to start getting hyped. This week has seen not only the arrival of some awesome fan art for the film, but a missive from Gunn himself that tells you why you should see his latest in IMAX 3D if you can.
The filmmaker took to Facebook to reveal why the IMAX version of the film will be the one to catch, and it’s all about aspect ratios.
In recent years, we’ve seen several films play around with shifting ratios during their stories – often as an aesthetic choice, but also to take advantage of footage shot specifically for IMAX. Guardians will be the latest to employ the technique. Gunn explains why:
“As an EXTRA benefit for those who see the film in IMAX 3D, we will be changing aspect ratios throughout the film in a way that makes the experience even fuller and more encompassing. I’ve personally chosen all the places where the changes occur and, again, I love how it’s coming along. The changing aspect ratios in this case are actually a part of the storytelling.”
The director goes on to add that those who can’t see the film in this particular format won’t be missing out on anything, while also making a case for the postconversion 3D process:
“Yes, if you see the film in 2D, you’ll get a full experience. But the 3D experience promises a little something extra. Unlike many directors, I’ve been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it’s spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting or overly showy. 3D conversion was once far inferior to shooting in 3D, but over the past couple years new technology has allowed us incredible control over the 3D effects, making it equal to or in some cases greater than shooting in 3D.”
As /Film points out, this could be pretty cool in that it would theoretically allow Gunn to emulate the layout style of a comic book on the screen. Think of those giant splash pages and the like, then imagine them on that huge IMAX screen. Could be awesome…
New fan-art posters rock
While the shifting aspect ratio could be awesome, these newly revealed fan posters for the film already are.
The coolest of the bunch is this mash-up featuring Guardians and Star Wars from Matt Ferguson. Ferguson nails it like a carpenter, blending the new film’s characters with the iconic positioning and imagery of A New Hope’s classic one sheet.
Ferguson wasn’t the only member of the Poster Posse to take a crack at one of the summer’s most anticipated films – he was joined by numerous others who turned in equally distinctive pieces. Check out a few of our favorites below, then aim your browser here for even more Guardians fan art.
