From Internet Meme to Movie: Get Ready to See Lots More of the Grumpy Cat

May 30, 2013

There are several superstars in the land of Internet cats, but only one has looks that could kill: Grumpy Cat. The 2013 Webby Awards winner's real name is Tardar Sauce (aka Tard), and her dwarfism and underbite give her a permanent frown. Deadline is reporting that the cranky kitty will now be the star of her own film. The website is describing the feature as a "Garfield-like" story. Does that mean there will be a lot of lasagna involved? We hope so.

"This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy," Broken Road’s Todd Garner said. "You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character." However, as is the case with many memes, the love affair has died quickly for some people. Is a Grumpy Cat movie too late?

Another consideration for the project is the kitty's voice. We've all read the memes and imagined her snarky grumblings in our own heads (OK, maybe that's just me). Will a voiceover ruin the allure? Grumpy is featured in the Will Kitty Play with It Web series, but she responds in meme-like text. Watch it, below. We've also included another video in which Grumpy's play partner uses a foreign accent, but it doesn't quite work for us. What do you think the voice of a crotchety kitty should sound like? Will you pay money to see this thing? Do you care? NO?
