'Gravity' Is Ahead of 'Avatar' in 3D Ticket Sales -- Is It Destined to Become the Biggest 3D Movie Ever?

Oct 04, 2013

There's this little movie you may have heard of. It's called Gravity. We've been writing about it almost daily, like the rest of the Internet. It turns out that a lot of people want to see Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts floating through the vast blackness of space in 3D. Our sister website Fandango reports that of its tickets sold for Gravity, 91% are for 3D showtimes, which puts the Alfonso Cuarón-directed movie above Avatar (the highest grossing movie of all time).

Avatar's Fandango presales for 3D ranked at 90%. "Gravity in 3D is exerting a strong pull on adventurous moviegoers, with 3D showtimes seeing their largest share of sales for a wide release in Fandango history," Fandango’s Chief Correspondent Dave Karger said. The past few years have been consumed with debates about 3D being an unnecessary medium used mainly by studios to bump up the ticket price — a mere gimmick.

Does the unprecedented number tell us that people are genuinely interested in 3D when it's a natural fit for the film? Do you see Gravity breaking other box office records?
