Got Lap Dance? Exclusive News About Showgirls: 15th Anniversary Edition and Blu-ray Debut

Mar 03, 2010

Few films in cinema history have enjoyed the post-theatrical resurrection that Paul Verhoeven’s trashy camp classic Showgirls has. The 1995 film about fame-hungry Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) and her quest to usurp the lead in the Vegas show Goddess from Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon) was the first (and last) NC-17 flick to get a wide distribution. Critics eviscerated this “All About Eve in a G-string” for its shameless vulgarity, Berkley’s over-the-top performance, outrageously bad dialogue and some of the unsexiest sex scenes of all times (remember Berkley’s seizure-like orgasm in the pool with Kyle MacLachlan?). Showgirls won seven Razzie Awards and later won an eighth: “Worst Film of the Decade.”

But like the ruthless Nomi who would stop at nothing to gyrate in front of a plastic volcano in Goddess, Showgirls rose from the ashes of box office failure to become a cult classic at midnight showings and is now one of MGM’s top-20 all-time bestsellers on video. It has been released on DVD twice, the last one being the V.I.P. Edition, which included two shot glasses, movie cards with drinking games, and a blindfold to play “Pin the Pasties on the Showgirl” on a nude poster of Berkley. Now we’ve uncovered news that you’ll get to see Nomi lick that stripper pole in high-definition when Showgirls: 15th Anniversary Edition makes its Blu-ray debut on June 15. This glittery triple dip will also be available on DVD and both versions will include some exclusive new extras, including a stripper pole class and a lap dance tutorial by the World-Famous Girls of Scores. Let the show begin...in your living room.
