Back in January, we were caught by surprise when J.J. Abrams' Valencia was revealed to be 10 Cloverfield Lane. The producer described it as a "blood relative" of his alien invasion movie Cloverfield. Without spoiling what happens in the thriller, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, it's safe to say that its mysterious connection to the original added a delightful and very intriguing layer.

Even before 10 Cloverfield Lane was released in March, Abrams told Fandango: "A larger franchise or anthology would suggest multiple movies, and we’re just focusing on this, which is the second of two. But I will say that there is something larger at play that if we’re lucky enough to get to do I think could result in something pretty cool.”

Now comes an unconfirmed report from The Wrap claiming that producer Abrams' forthcoming project God Particle is, in fact, the next movie connected to the Cloverfield universe. First revealed in June 2012, God Particle was described at the time as a sci-fi thriller in which a Hadron Accelerator causes the Earth to disappear, distressing Americans living on an orbiting space station. Then "things get even stranger when a European spaceship shows up on their radar – because it may not be the rescue they’re hoping for."

The project began casting right after 10 Cloverfield Lane became a hit at the box office, eventually snaring David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris O'Dowd, Zhang Ziyi, John Ortiz and Aksel Hennie as cast members. Julius Onah directed.

Reportedly, Abrams is developing more movies as part of the shared Cloverfield universe, with plans to release one related title per year. God Particle will open in theaters on February 24, 2017.
