Amidst all the hype and bluster over John Carter last week (and snickers about the future of Eddie Murphy’s career after A Thousand Words scored 0% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), a little movie came out with the odd title Salmon Fishing in the Yemen that hooked audiences to the tune of $240,000. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you figure it only opened on 18 screens, $13,333 per screen is pretty darn good.
The indie, which CBS Films picked up at Toronto last year, stars Ewan McGregor as a fisheries expert brought in by a Yemen sheikh on a mission to bring fly-fishing to the Middle East. Emily Blunt stars as the scientist he ends up falling for. It’s directed by Lasse Hallström and Kristin Scott Thomas also stars.
If it didn’t make it to a theater near you, don’t fret—the movie expands to some 40 screens, so hopefully you can catch it this weekend. Meantime, here’s a quick exclusive TV spot to lure you in.
