Former MMA fighter, fitness model and Haywire
star Gina Carano
has been cast as the first female Expendable, Variety
reports. The untitled project is being written by Dutch Southern and produced by Adi Shankar's 1984 Private Defense Contractors (The Grey
, Killing Them Softly
). "I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables
without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without Jamba," Shankar told the trade.
Carano will be appearing in the sixth installment of Fast and Furious and the Taken-esque In the Blood directed by John Stockwell. She's certainly got the presence and power to pull off the action-packed role, so this casting decision should come as no surprise. The ridiculous fun of The Expendables centers on seeing old-school action stars (usually barely coherent) pick up their guns once more and engage in over-the-top battles. Carano is a newcomer to the genre, so it seems that the ladies' version is ditching that idea and kicking it Avengers-style.
Who else will be joining her? Will she be the "baby" of the Expendabelles, with the likes of vets Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton and Uma Thurman by her side? Or, will the film opt for another generation of stars like Michelle Rodriguez (who has stated
she doesn't think she's done enough action films to qualify), Milla Jovovich and Kate Beckinsale? Lucy Liu, Sarah Michelle Gellar (who just welcomed her second child into the world, so yeah... maybe not), Eliza Dushku and Zoe Saldana are other names that have been circulating amongst fans.
We'd even love to see an experienced badass like Helen Mirren do her thing, too. There's also stuntwoman extraordinaire Zoe Bell to consider.
